Are international students eligible to apply for your programs?
Yes, international students are welcome to apply! We provide information about visa requirements, tuition fees, language expectations, and how we support students coming from abroad. Learn more about applying as an international student.
Is studying in Canada affordable?
Canada is internationally recognised for the high quality of its education, yet tuition fees here are among the lowest in the English-speaking world. Thanks to our affiliation with McGill University, you receive theological education of the highest calibre—at a fraction of the typical cost. At Dio, students benefit from these high standards at costs far below comparable schools in other countries.
Montreal further strengthens this advantage as one of North America’s most affordable major cities.
As part of our commitment to sharing our resources with the global church, students preparing for ministry in certain provinces of the Anglican Communion — and in United Churches under similar criteria — may qualify to pay tuition and fees at the domestic rate. To be eligible, students must provide a signed letter from a bishop confirming that they are either a priest in good standing or preparing for ordained ministry. Please see our full tuition policy for details.
Is there financial aid available for international students?
Yes, Dio offers limited financial support, including need-based bursaries, and encourages students to explore church-related funding through dioceses, regional councils, or congregational sponsorships. However, it’s important to be realistic: this support generally helps with tuition and program costs, but does not cover major expenses such as relocation, visas, or living costs. If you are considering studying in Canada, we strongly recommend exploring additional funding sources and carefully reviewing all potential costs before applying. Can I apply for the Diploma in Ministry as an international student?

What documents and information do I need to apply?
You will need to submit an online application. All applications must include:
-

-
A personal statement of approximately 500 words outlining your reasons for applying to the Master of Divinity at Dio, your preparation for this study, and how you hope the program will help you achieve your goals.

Are programs offered in English or French?
Montreal Dio’s programs affiliated with McGill University are taught in English, so you do not need to know French to participate. Students whose first language is not English will need to demonstrate proficiency through standard language tests.
The Licentiate in Ministry provides a flexible pathway for students who may not have an undergraduate degree or previous theological studies but do have some prior learning in theology. It is offered in both French and English, with a particular emphasis on accessibility for francophone students.
We encourage francophone students to explore this program, as well as our other programs offered in French.
Studying in Montreal also gives you the opportunity to enjoy the city’s rich bilingual culture, where English and French coexist beautifully. It’s a unique environment that allows students to experience a diverse linguistic and cultural community while pursuing their theological studies.
Are the programs offered online, remotely, or in person in Montreal?
We offer a range of programs with different learning formats to accommodate both local and distance students.
- M.Div., Bachelor, Master of Sacred Theology (Taught in conjunction with McGill): Classes are in person. In the third year of the M.Div., only three weeks per semester are in-person; the rest can be online or completed outside Montreal.
- Licentiate in Ministry: Mostly online, designed for distance learners, with one week-long residential event per year. Students stay connected to an online learning community.
- Diploma in Ministry: Hybrid-online format; can be completed with minimal in-person attendance.
- United Church Testamur: Personalized study program; most requirements can be completed remotely in two semesters.
- Reading and Tutorial: Fully remote, self-paced theological study for those unable to relocate to Montreal.
