How Did a Philosophy Book Change the Course of One Young Man’s Life?

For Mani Asadieraghi, the path to Christian faith and ministry was neither expected nor straightforward. Raised in a devoted Muslim family in Iran, he never imagined that a chance encounter with a biblical text would eventually lead him to theological studies in Montreal and a life dedicated to Christian ministry.

Now a first-year M.Div. student, Mani reflects on a journey marked by intellectual curiosity, spiritual discovery, immigration, and a deep sense of vocation. His story is one of seeking truth, finding community, and responding to a call that had been quietly growing throughout his life.

Mani’s introduction to Christianity came in an unusual way. While in his early twenties, he was reading a philosophy book that referenced the New Testament Letter to the Ephesians. For someone raised in Iran within a practicing Muslim household, encountering Christian scripture in that context was uncommon. Yet the passage sparked something deeper. “The way Christ was presented in Paul’s letter to the Ephesians captured my attention,” he recalls. What began as an academic curiosity soon became a personal search. Driven by a desire to understand more, Mani started reading Christian texts and learning about the life and teachings of Jesus. The more he explored, the more his interest grew. Rather than finding a set of abstract ideas, he discovered a vision of grace and relationship with God that transformed his understanding of faith.

Mani had already made Montreal his home, having lived in the city for several years after immigrating from Iran. While pursuing university studies at Concordia, he noticed a church located near the campus library. One day, after spending time studying, he decided to step inside. “I thought, ‘This looks like a beautiful church,'” he remembers. What seemed like a simple visit would become the beginning of a much deeper connection. Later, after his mother joined him in Canada, a Christian friend who served in that church helped introduce them more fully to the congregation. The church community became an important part of Mani’s spiritual growth. Over time, he officially joined St. Jax and began participating more actively in its life and ministries. Looking back, he sees those relationships as an important part of God’s guidance in his journey.
Although Mani’s faith journey eventually led him to Christianity, his desire to understand God was present long before his conversion. Even while growing up as a Muslim, he was drawn to theology and religious questions. His academic studies focused on science and biology, including studies at Concordia University, but his intellectual interests consistently extended beyond the laboratory. “I always had a desire to learn more about God,” he explains. For years, he pursued spiritual understanding through study, reflection, and personal effort. Yet he eventually came to realize that God’s grace could not be earned through achievement or knowledge alone. Instead, he discovered the joy of being embraced by God. That realization became one of the defining moments of his Christian faith.

As an immigrant living far from relatives and familiar surroundings, Mani experienced many of the challenges that newcomers often face. Establishing roots in a new country can be difficult, especially when family members remain far away. The church helped fill that gap. He describes the Christian community as an extended family where people work together, support one another, and discover their unique roles within the Body of Christ. What impressed him most was the sense of order, care, and belonging he encountered. “The church became a place of warmth and shelter,” he says. For Mani, Christian community was not simply about attending services. It was a living expression of faith in which people cared for one another and served together. That experience of belonging became especially meaningful as he adjusted to life in Canada and built a new future far from his birthplace.

As Mani became more involved in church life, he also began serving within the Persian Christian community. The ministry brought both joy and responsibility. He encountered the unique opportunities and challenges that come with serving immigrants who are navigating questions of faith, identity, language, and culture. Through this experience, he sensed a growing call to deepen his preparation for ministry. “There was a moment when I realized I needed more resources,” he explains. “I needed to be empowered intellectually and spiritually.” That realization prompted him to seek further theological formation. Wanting to grow in knowledge, wisdom, and love for the Church, he began exploring opportunities for theological education.

Mani eventually reached out to inquire about theological studies, hoping to find a place where he could continue growing as both a disciple and a minister. What attracted him was not merely academic learning. While he values theological study, he believes formation is about something deeper. For him, the goal is not simply becoming more knowledgeable about philosophy, theology, or church history. Rather, it is about participating more fully in the reality of Christian life and community. He describes the Church as a people gathered in Christ, united by a common desire for service, support, and spiritual growth. Looking ahead, Mani hopes to bring what he has learned into a variety of settings. Whether serving in parish ministry, chaplaincy, community outreach, or other forms of leadership, his focus remains the same: helping others encounter the love and belonging he has experienced.

Today, as a first-year M.Div. student, Mani continues to follow a path that began with a simple reference in a philosophy book and grew into a life-changing encounter with Christ. His story reminds us that faith journeys often begin in unexpected places. What starts as curiosity can become conviction. What begins with study can lead to transformation. And what feels at first like a personal search can blossom into a calling to serve others. For Mani, that journey continues, guided by faith, sustained by community, and rooted in a desire to help others discover God’s grace.
