For the Soul of a Nation: An Introduction to the Church in Canada

An Online Open Enrolment Course

Thursday evenings,  23 & 30 October, 6, 13, 20 November, 7:00pm to 8:30pm

The next in our series of online open enrolment courses is an introduction to the religious movements, pivotal moments and influential figures that have shaped Canadian church history from pre-colonial times to the present. Students will examine the intersection of faith, society and politics, exploring how religious movements, institutions and Christian leaders influenced and shaped the nation now known as Canada. Topics include the church and colonialism, particularly in relation to Indigenous peoples, various Christian movements arising during the establishment of Upper and Lower Canada, as well as the church’s role in the birth of Canada and the so-called “Triumph” of the church as the conscience of a nation exploring how the church in Canada both supported and challenged the status quo. The course will also discuss the ascendancy and influence of the evangelical, social gospel traditions, the Canadian ecumenical movement, along with the church’s more recent adaptations to Canada’s multicultural context.
